When someone is arrested, served, or facing a legal problem, they search for help close to home. “DUI lawyer near me” and “criminal defense attorney Miami” are local searches, and the results people see first are a map pack followed by a handful of websites. Local SEO is the work of earning a place there. The building blocks are well understood, though results take time.
1. Build a page for each practice area and place
A single “Practice Areas” page that lists everything rarely ranks for anything. Give each service its own page: DUI, drug charges, domestic violence, expungement, and so on. If you serve several counties or cities, add a useful page for each place, covering the local courthouse, how cases move through it, and what a first appointment looks like. Write for the person reading. Thin pages that swap a city name into the same paragraph don’t help anyone and tend to be ignored.
2. Complete your Google Business Profile
Your profile is often what a searcher sees before your website. Choose the right primary category, list your services, add real photos, set accurate hours, and link to the right page rather than only the home page. Keep it current. We cover the details in our Google Business Profile checklist for lawyers.
3. Earn genuine reviews
Reviews influence both rankings and the decision to call. The goal is a steady flow of honest reviews from clients who are happy to give them, with thoughtful replies. Read the rules for your state and for Google before you ask. More in how lawyers can get more Google reviews.
4. Keep your details consistent
Your firm’s name, address and phone number should match everywhere: your website, your Google profile, bar and legal directories, and social profiles. Small differences (“Suite” versus “#”, an old phone number) make it harder for search engines to be confident about who you are. Start with the directories lawyers are actually listed in, not a bulk submission to hundreds of sites.
5. Fix the technical basics
- Speed on a phone. Most legal searches happen on mobile. Google’s Core Web Vitals guidance treats a largest contentful paint under 2.5 seconds, interaction responsiveness under 200 milliseconds and layout shift under 0.1 as good.
- Clean titles and descriptions that say what each page is and where you practice.
- Structured data (LocalBusiness or LegalService markup) so your name, address and services are machine-readable.
- A tap-to-call button on every page and a short contact form that actually reaches you.
- HTTPS, a sitemap and no duplicate copies of the same content on other domains.
6. Measure what matters
Measure consultations, not just traffic. Set up Google Search Console so you can see which searches show your pages, and track calls and form submissions by source. Review it monthly. If a practice area produces calls, give it more attention. If a page gets visits and no calls, fix the page.
How long does it take?
Technical fixes and profile improvements can show results within weeks. Rankings for competitive terms in a big city usually take months of consistent work, and nobody can promise a particular position. Be wary of anyone who does.
